200+ mph us-built ev roadster

Richland WA based Shelby SuperCars is planning the rollout of their SSC-EV. The manufacturer claims "Not only does the Ultimate Aero EV have a range of 150‐200 miles on a single charge, but SSC’s "Charge on the Run" onboard charging system allows for 10 minute full battery recharges on a 220V service."

Gorgeous car but color me doubtful...

A car with a 200 wh/mi energy use "burns" 40kwh in a 200 mile trip. Assuming that this represents a full charge, 40,000 watt/hours requires 1500a at 240v.

Everyone who has a 1500a service raise your hand.

Financing an EV conversion

How to finance your new project?

If you're like me, you already have a variety of projects sitting around. I've found a new advertising site which specializes in classic cars.

A quick browse through Classic Cars Global's site suggests that older trucks and musclecars are well represented, as well as some older sports cars like Spitfires and MGs which would make great conversion platforms.

Maximize the value of your last project to finance the current one. Who knows? If you happen to have an old Ferarri in the back, you might be able to upgrade to those LiFePo4 batteries you have your eye on.

01/18/2009 - Will they run? Automakers in Detroit hype their hybrid and electric cars - STLtoday.com

Automakers accomplished the easy part of their business promotion last week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

They hyped their future electric vehicles. They outlined their research in alternative fuel technologies. They proclaimed these environmentally friendly vehicles, from the Honda Insight gasoline-electric hybrid to the electric Chevrolet Volt, as an important part of their future.

But the difficult part is to come: bringing those vehicles to dealership lots in bulk and persuading consumers to buy them.

"Making an electric vehicle is not a viability plan for the next four years," said Stephanie Brinley, an analyst with automotive consulting firm AutoPacific. "These vehicles and research into alternative power are critical for the future of these companies, but it's going to be a long time before they make a significant impact on the balance sheet."

It seems apparent that pressure is building to allow fuel prices to climb, and unless I miss my guess, congress will be debating a $1/gallon gas tax, a return of the EV tax credit and research grants in EV technology in the next year.

I dislike paying more for gas as much as anyone, but this will make our hobby more economically feasible.

Dodge Zeo concept 250 hp + 250 miles range.

Concept cars. I know, I shouldn't get too excited at vaporware, but this is really cool. 0-60 in six seconds, 64 Kwh lithium-ion battery pack and a 250+ mile range... yeah, baby.

Given the current economy, it's probably not a company-saver for Dodge, but it sure seems like they could sell a few... it looks like it would compete well with the Tesla.

ZOMG! This is the utility van, baby!

Nissan NV200 Shows How to Make Panel Vans a Hot Trend | GreenCar.com

This is about the coolest thing I've ever seen! I'm rethinking my plan for an EV. Imagine a mini-van with the batteries under the floor and an extendable pod which slides, pop-out RV style from the rear. The passenger seat is attached to the sliding apparatus so it becomes an office chair in the cargo compartment when the tool pod is deployed.

The big problem with trucks and service bodies is the inaccessability of the cargo. This completely solves that problem.

Who says that GM has no technical skill?

Granted, I'd prefer that they put this kind of thought into a 50mpg Malibu, but I can see their point... who would pay 40 large for one?
